Eco's mehndi
I will try to remember the full events of the weekend but if i forget some bits please feel to fill it in Zzze and Eco. Finished work early on Friday- dunno what for except to go buy cans of tuna for our guests from Sainsburys (which we didn't make anything with at the end) and to go shopping to get Aischa Essafi's wedding present. It was nice taking the afternoon off as the morning went by really quickly!! Plus, didn't have much to do so spent most the time writing the previous blog...
Ayesha, Zzze and my middle-sister ILo/ Haifa came up on the friday. We then started to decorate for the mehndi party. Ayesha made these amazing flower things- they were just painted flowers on fabric but they looked amazing!! Before decorating we thought we'd watch Bride & Prejudice- what a crap film but Ash looks so beautiful so i thought i'd watch it again. Zzze practiced putting mehndi on F's niece and my sister while Ayesha put mehndi on my feet. They're both very talented mashaAllah...and creative... still need to find a skill!! Ayesha bought up the pink orchid lights which do seem to be present at evry one of our events this year- kinda like our little trade mark!! We ended up sleeping at 2am, having only decorated half the room.
Woke up at 7.30 on Saturday. And NO it wasn't to prcatice the dance...we had to get ready and trek it to Slough to get the Aischa's walima. Hendon to Kings Cross to Paddington to Slough...thank God i didn't wear my saree on the journey- it would have got ruined or would have come off! This is the bit i forgot to tell u Eco- we waited to Syra for like 5/10 mins so that wasn't too bad...then we had to wait for Lydie....for like more then half hour. Still, i wasn't p***ed off about the time delay cos we weren't gonna be late but we offered to help out so didn't wanna let them down. We ended up on a packed train but got to Slough in like 20 mins or so. Still keeping my cool considering i'm having to take loadsa people to a destination. Once we were at Slough station Lydie hadn't got a ticket thinking she could get one on the train. Instead of just quickly going through the barriers withme we decided to tell the guy the truth and hoped they would just let her buy a ticket off them... £20 single from Paddington to Slough(that's two stops btw on the overground train). We paid £10 from Hendon to Slough return!! She was p***ed off..i was p***ed off- you know how i hate people relying on me to get from place to place. *reminded me of Abu Ease class*...may Allah (swt) forgive me for thinking like this and stilll give me reward for taking them, Ameen. She had to pay anyway and since we were in Slough she might as well just go to the wedding!! She gave her old address so inshaAllah they won't charge her!!
Finally got to the venue- well, what we thought was the venue and where the taxi driver dropped us off. There were no cars to be seen and the door to the building was closed....i was so just gonna go back to Hendon, thinking i'd rather be at the demonstration with Eco and Zzze! Since none of us had the wedding card with us we had to ring Anisa to get the number written on it- it was Aischa's father-in-law that picked up. He then came into view across the road so we weren't that far from the hall. When we got there we changed into our sarees- Syra trying to decide whether her one was OTT and whether it would outstage the bride...the rest of us deciding whether it would be worth getting changed cos as far as Asian wedding go (the one's im used to that is) it is hard to segregate with every male realtive thinking they your 'uncle'!! Anyhow, we got changed...went to the bathroom to put on make-up. Lydie put it on for me since i have no clue how to and Ayesha was busy doing hers...then realised the women's loo was next to the mens eating area and it was getting fairly packed. Forgot to take my nikab so was a little embarrassing walking past. Managed to find the perfect seat...in the corner somewhere near the stage and good enough to see everyone. Aischa then came to the hall with Hubby- mashaAllah they make such a cute couple and WOW she looked stunning mashAllah. We eat, drank and took pictures (minus hijaab)...we only got to take hijaab off for like 5 mins as men just coming in. Bride was obviously p***ed off but Asians just can't get this segregation thing right!!!
Trekked it to Hendon and made it back by 5.30. We were all so nackered but had to get ready for the mehndi. The bride-too-be looked beautiful in her green attire- will let you read about it on her blog!! ;p We just started sitting around and singing mehndi songs (very badly) when i had to get changed into outfit no 2 to do the dance. Quickly put on my gorgeous (mashaAllah) outfit, plait in the hair piece, get Ayesha to do the make-up, put on the bangles.... then i became very nervous! I have never danced before in public- wel, i have but not on my own with evryone staring!! I have never done Bollywood dancing so this was my first (and definately not last) attempt- things i do for Eco!?!! Got into position and started my vey first move. 5 mins later, sweating like a pig and with evryone staring, i was done- it was all over!! I made only two slight mistakes- i hop nobdy realised. They wanted another song- but i only knew this one so i had to promise to do it again later. The rest of the mehndi was nice- not too many people and not to less. There were aunti-jis, kids, friends...and we had pizza!!! After eating we just put on music and it was onlt the kids dancing really as everyone was shy! Managed to get the bride to dance- will send it to everyone who wants to see Eco do her thang! ( i am so in trouble!!). Reena (my dance teacher extraordinaire) came and we all begged for her to do a dance but she refused saying she can't remeber full routines- did my dance in front of her...she felt so proud of me!! The party kinda died down once the kids stopped dancing (well, there were just two of them at the end)- they were so good. And one of then asked me for my autograph at the end... think she must have thought i was a Bollywood star. We were all so tired by the time we went to sleep- atleast we didn't have to wake up early the next day!!
Sunday- this will be a quick summary! Ayesha and Syra made breakfast (amazing omelette and toast) whilst we all got ready to go wonder London city. We dropped Syra onto a tube to get her to uncle's wedding and we got to Camden. Been here so many times now...its so does not appeal to me anymore. But am going to go next weekend as i want to buy this Batik painted frame for my new bedroom. We were there for quite some time with none of buying anything!! Amazingly none of us got lost... we then went to Regents Park mosque to pray, chilled in the park for a bit and then went to Camden again to eat. It does seem as though we didn't really do much but we were on our feet all day and got back at 8pm.
Packed my bag for Haifa to take home while Ayesha was experimenting on Eco's face to see what would match her outfit. Between all of us (well, just me and Ayesha really) we thought we could get the right colour to match her wedding outfit- how wrong we were. I only had glittery ones that didn't match at all!! It didn't help that we decided to do it when ther was no natural light at all!?!! Anyway- will inshaAllah get it sorted in two weeks time!!
Best get back to work....
